Fentanyl Implicated in UNC Student's Overdose Death, Family Seeks Justice

A revised autopsy report has implicated fentanyl in the overdose death of Elizabeth “Gracie” Burton, a UNC Chapel Hill freshman found in a Duke University dorm with multiple substances in her system. Despite the new findings, no charges have been directly linked to her death.

Her family, represented by attorney Chris Adkins, is actively seeking justice, expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the case by authorities. They are now looking to be legally acknowledged as victims in a federal case against an individual connected to Burton on the night of her demise.

This case also involves broader allegations of drug transactions leading up to the incident. The family's struggle for answers and accountability highlights the complexities and challenges in addressing the repercussions of substance abuse and the ensuing legal processes.

Meanwhile, Duke University has not publicly commented on the incident, and UNC Chapel Hill has stated its policy of not issuing campus-wide notifications about student deaths to respect privacy and avoid potential harm from such announcements.

From Peril to Pampered: NC Dog Finds Hope After Dumpster Rescue

A poodle narrowly escaped death at a Lenoir County waste facility and is now on the path to adoption after being rescued and rehabilitated by the local SPCA. In a turn of fate, a poodle who faced a grim end at a waste center in Eastern North Carolina has been given a second chance at life.

The dog, found inside a box moments from being compacted at the Lenoir County Waste Center, was saved and subsequently ran into the arms of Kayla Sullivan, a heavy equipment operator at the facility. Following the rescue, the poodle was cared for by the Lenoir County SPCA, where she made a swift recovery and soon attracted the attention of potential adopters.

The dog is now awaiting spaying before she can settle into her new, loving home. Meanwhile, the individuals who abandoned her have yet to be identified.

Where to Catch the Tail End of Fall Foliage

The mountains of Western North Carolina are nearing the end of their leaf season, but the foothills and Piedmont regions continue to offer pockets of fall color. While higher elevations like Boone are past their peak, areas around 2,000 feet in elevation still have some color to display.

Chimney Rock State Park, with its iconic vistas, is currently showcasing late-season hues, particularly visible from its lower trails. Due to high attendance during the busy fall season, please expect long lines and waits in the park this weekend.

Other recommended spots include Crowders Mountain State Park and various trails in the DuPont State Recreational Forest. Despite not matching the exceptional colors of the previous year, this season has been rated highly for its beauty and has drawn significant numbers of visitors. Conservation organizations also highlight newly developed trails that offer unique views of the changing landscape.
