Mother Advocates for "Jesse's Law" To Save Lives of Children

Following the tragic death of her 3-year-old son, Jesse Melvin, due to domestic violence in 2012, Christy Melvin has been tirelessly advocating for a change in legislation. Jesse was killed by his father shortly after he was granted joint custody. Christy aims to introduce "Jesse's Law," which seeks to prevent children from being placed in the custody of abusive parents.

Statistics indicate that approximately 58,000 children are awarded custody to abusive parents annually in the U.S., with around 969 children having been murdered.

Supporters of the proposed law, including domestic violence survivors, emphasize its potential to save lives. In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a memorial event will be held at the North Carolina State Capitol to remember victims of domestic violence and raise awareness about the issue.

If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, you can call The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE). For county-by-county help, the North Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence has a list of resources at nccadv.org.

Two North Carolina Courage Players Nominated for NWSL Awards

The North Carolina Courage soccer team boasts two finalists for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) major awards. Forward Kerolin Nicoli is in the running for the league's Most Valuable Player award, while Kaleigh Kurtz is a finalist for Defender of the Year.

Kerolin, who represented Brazil in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, had an impressive season with 10 goals and three assists. She played a pivotal role in the Courage's victory in the UKG NWSL Challenge Cup final, marking their second consecutive win. Additionally, she was named the NWSL Best XI of the Month twice this season.

Kurtz showcased her consistency by playing every minute of the regular season and the Challenge Cup. She was a key figure in the Courage's defense, contributing to 10 clean sheets and maintaining an 83% pass accuracy. Kurtz also earned a spot in the NWSL Best XI of June.

Fans have the opportunity to vote for their favorite players for various awards and the overall Best XI until Friday, October 27.

Cary Resident Wins Lottery Jackpot After Football Team's Defeat

Despite his favorite football team's recent loss, Stephen Latson of Cary found a reason to celebrate. He purchased Cash 5 lottery tickets and secured a jackpot win of $394,216. Latson's winning ticket, bought from Harris Teeter on Green Level Church Road, was one of three that matched all five numbers in the $1.18 million drawing. Initially unaware of the full amount he'd won, Latson was pleasantly surprised when he took home $280,881 after tax deductions. He plans to use his winnings for bill payments and home repairs.
