A Plea for Safety: NC Mother's Call to Action This Halloween

A North Carolina mother, who lost her daughter in a tragic accident while trick-or-treating last year, urges the community to exercise caution this Halloween.

As the Halloween season approaches, Ayonna Suttles of North Carolina is advocating for heightened safety during the holiday. Her plea comes after the devastating loss of her daughter, Aliyah Thornhill, who was struck by a vehicle while trick-or-treating in Oak Ridge last year.

This incident echoed a similar tragedy from 2019 when 11-year-old Noah Chambers met a similar fate. With these events in mind, Suttles is urging parents, drivers, and children to be vigilant on the roads. To honor Aliyah's memory, Riverside High School plans to dedicate a bench on November 9, and Suttles aims to host a community Halloween celebration in her daughter's honor.

Triangle's Housing Market & the Hidden Struggles of Homeless Families

Cary, NC, a suburban and family-oriented town, is situated to the southeast of the historically rich and diverse city of Durham, NC. In the heart of Durham, juxtaposed against its burgeoning skyline, lies the emergency shelter, Families Moving Forward. This haven provides refuge for approximately 20 families daily, offering them a temporary escape from the harsh realities of homelessness.

Durham's Families Moving Forward shelter highlights the growing issue of homelessness, especially among families with young children. The Triangle's housing market and rising living costs contribute to the problem, with over 32,000 children under 5 estimated to be homeless statewide.

r. Mary Haskett of North Carolina State University identifies the Triangle's housing market as a significant factor, with the rising cost of living and stagnant wages further complicating matters. The shelter currently aids about 60 children under 5, who often miss crucial developmental stages.

Statewide, the number of homeless children in this age bracket is estimated to exceed 32,000. While schools are federally mandated to assist homeless children, tracking those outside the school system remains problematic. Dr. Haskett calls for accurate data collection and streamlined resources to address this issue effectively.

Retirement Community Resident's Death Ruled Homicide

WakeMed Hospital in Cary recently treated Lillie Johnson Cooper, an 88-year-old from Windsor Point Retirement Community in Fuquay-Varina, following a reported altercation at the facility. Despite our dedicated medical intervention, Ms. Cooper's injuries proved fatal.

Posthumous investigations by the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined her death to be a homicide, with the assault being the direct cause. The subsequent legal proceedings have led to the charging of Cynthia Williams Sellars, a former employee of the retirement community, with murder. Her initial court appearance highlighted the severity of the charges, with potential sentences including life without parole or even the death penalty.
