Wake County to Lower Property Tax Rate in Budget Proposal, Seeks Public Feedback

Wake County has unveiled a $2 billion budget for fiscal year 2025, reflecting an increase of $200 million from the previous fiscal period to address the needs of its rapidly expanding population. The growth, driven by an influx of approximately 51 new residents daily, has escalated demand for services and infrastructure, necessitating higher operational expenses despite a boost in revenue.

The budget proposal includes a reduction in the property tax rate to 51.05 cents per $100 of assessed value. However, in January, more than half of Wake County's residents experienced a rise in property valuations, with increases reaching up to 80 percent for some properties. Consequently, these homeowners are facing higher property taxes.

Public input is encouraged, with residents invited to attend hearings or provide feedback online until May 22. The County Commissioners will review public comments and deliberate on possible budget adjustments during a session on May 23, with a final decision scheduled for June 3.

For those who don't want to wait, you can weigh in online now. The public comment period will remain open until May 22.
