Wrong-Way Amazon Van Causes Traffic Delays on I-40

On Tuesday evening, traffic on Interstate 40 in Raleigh was disrupted when a stolen Amazon delivery van drove the wrong way on the highway, sideswiping several vehicles.

The van was taken from an apartment complex on West Morgan Street while the driver was making a delivery. After being spotted near Wade Avenue, the vehicle continued its erratic path on I-40, leading to an alert from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The van's reckless journey ended near mile marker 286 at the Old Reedy Creek Road bridge when Raleigh police apprehended the suspect. While the incident caused traffic delays, there were no injuries, and normal traffic flow resumed shortly after. Read Full Story

Decades of Dedication: How Post 67 Shapes the Future of Cary’s Veterans and Youth

American Legion Post 67 stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community service and veterans’ welfare in Cary, North Carolina. For 77 years, this local branch of the nation's largest wartime veterans service organization has not only been a sanctuary for those who served but also a vibrant center of civic activity.

Founded in 1947, Post 67 quickly became a cornerstone of local veteran assistance and community engagement. With a current membership exceeding 200, the post is known for its active involvement in everything from scholarships for high school students to support for national veterans’ initiatives.

The leadership at Post 67, under the guidance of Commander Lee Wood, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, steers the organization toward a dual mission of supporting veterans and uplifting the surrounding community. Commander Wood, who took over leadership as of July 1, 2024, brings years of military and community service experience, reinforcing the post's commitment to these goals.

The impact of Post 67 is wide-reaching. Members provide mentorship through programs like Boys State and the High School Oratorical Contest, which annually awards substantial scholarships (ranging from $20K to $25K) to national winners.

Locally, members volunteer in Cary with The Carying Place, Chamber of Commerce, The Cary Assisting Police (CAP) Team, Dorcas Ministries, Wake County Council of Veterans, NC Veterans Council, Cary High School, NC Governors Working Group, Military Missions In Action.

One of the post's signature events is the Memorial Day Ceremony, a poignant tribute to fallen comrades, which encapsulates their commitment to honor and remembrance. Additionally, the Post's 60' x 40' meeting hall doubles as an event venue for rent for community events or parties when not in use, reflecting their commitment to inclusivity.

The Legion's efforts extend beyond traditional veteran services. The Operation Comfort Warriors program is a hallmark of their outreach, providing comfort items to wounded warriors and transforming sterile hospital environments into spaces of warmth and community.

The success of Post 67 depends on active membership, participation, and volunteerism. The post’s endeavors in legislative advocacy at various government levels underscore their unwavering commitment to veteran welfare and public policy.

Looking ahead, Post 67 is not slowing down. Their major annual fundraiser, offering parking for the Lazy Daze festival (August 24-25), promises to bolster their programs. They are also planning the Veterans Benefit Live, a community-centered event scheduled for September 12-14 at the Herb Young Community Center and participation in the Raleigh Veterans Day Parade (Saturday November 9).

Through decades of service, Post 67 has not only supported veterans but has also sculpted a model of community engagement that resonates across Cary and beyond. In an era where community often takes a backseat to individual pursuits, Cary American Legion Post 67 remains a beacon of collective effort and altruistic service.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇

Unlike most fish, sharks have the ability to blink with both eyes, thanks to a nictitating membrane. This membrane, essentially a third eyelid, sweeps across the eye from the bottom or the side, protecting and cleansing the surface while retaining visibility and moisture.

This adaptation is crucial for sharks during feeding or when they encounter debris in the water, as it helps shield their eyes from potential harm. This blinking mechanism is a fascinating aspect of shark anatomy, underscoring their evolved adaptations to their marine environment.

For more detailed information about sharks and their unique adaptations, including their vision, you can visit the Florida Museum of Natural History's shark page.
