Dangerous Rip Currents Claim Another Life at North Carolina’s Outer Banks
The Outer Banks witnessed another tragic loss over the weekend as a 12-year-old boy from Maryland drowned in dangerous rip currents near Corolla Beach.
His death marks the fifth fatality linked to rip currents along North Carolina’s coast this month.
Despite warnings from the National Weather Service and extensive rescue efforts, the boy could not be saved. This incident is part of a disturbing trend, with several others having died in similar circumstances since the beginning of July, leading to nearly 200 rescues.
The persistent and powerful rip currents have made this summer particularly perilous for swimmers across the state's beaches. Read Full Story
North Carolina Reports First Severe West Nile Cases of the Year
North Carolina has reported two severe cases of West Nile virus, the first in the state this year.
The virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, often results in mild symptoms but can cause severe complications, particularly in older adults and those with weakened immune systems.
Nationwide, 72 cases have been documented across 21 states, with nearly 60% of these classified as severe.
Health officials urge the public to take preventive measures against mosquito bites, as there is no vaccine for the virus. North Carolina typically sees about 10 cases of West Nile each year, underscoring the importance of vigilance during mosquito season. Read Full Report

Mosa Pet Spa Combines Grooming and Giving Back in Support of Local Rescue
Mosa Pet Spa & Boutique in Cary is hosting a special event this August to support local dog rescue efforts. On August 18th, the spa will hold a “Wash-a-Thon” to benefit Perfectly Imperfect Pups (PIPs), a rescue organization dedicated to helping at-risk dogs, particularly those with special needs.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mosa Pet Spa will offer discounted grooming services, including baths, nail trims, and ear cleanings for dogs, at a price of $40. Half of the proceeds from these services will go directly to PIPs. Current fosters with PIPs can take advantage of these services for free.
Additionally, the boutique will be open until 3 p.m., with 20% of all retail sales being donated to the rescue. For those looking to adopt, PIPs will have dogs on-site throughout the day, offering a chance for potential adopters to meet their new best friend.
To participate, reservations are required and can be made through the event link on Mosa Pet Spa's website. The event promises to be a meaningful day for both pet owners and animal lovers, as every dollar spent helps to create a brighter future for dogs in need. Learn more about PIPS on their website.

The Answer to the Cary Spotlight Hook Trivia Question 👇👇👇
The letter "Q" holds the unique distinction of being the only letter in the English alphabet that does not appear in the name of any U.S. state. This curious fact highlights the randomness and variety of language usage across geographical names. Despite the extensive vocabulary and diverse linguistic roots of state names, from Native American origins to those derived from European languages, the letter Q somehow remains absent from all 50 U.S. state names, showcasing an interesting quirk of English orthography and naming conventions.
